ASHRAE Publishes Standard 189.1
ORLANDO, Fla.—ASHRAE has published ANSI/ASHRAE/USGBC/IES Standard 189.1, Standard for the Design of High-Performance, Green Buildings Except Low-Rise Residential Buildings, the first U.S. code-intended commercial green building standard. Published Friday, the standard is intended to be adopted into local codes. It covers site sustainability, water-use efficiency, energy efficiency, indoor environmental quality and the building’s impact on the atmosphere, materials and resources. “Provisions in the standard can reduce negative environmental impacts through high-performance building design, construction and operations practices,” said ASHRAE President Gordon Holness. “Ultimately, the aim is not just energy efficiency but a balance of environmental responsibility, resource efficiency, occupant comfort and well being and community sensitivity, all while supporting the goal of sustainable development.”

In terms of exhibit space, the Show was the eighth largest of the 62 stagings of AHR Expo with 354,454 square feet (8.14 acres) of net exhibit space. There are 1,826 exhibitors on the floor, including 370 international exhibitors and 209 who are exhibiting for the first time. ASHRAE is a cosponsor of AHR Expo, with the Air-Conditioning, Heating, and Refrigeration Institute (AHRI). The Show manager is International Exposition Company.

AHR Expo Attendees Say 2010 to be Good Year
ORLANDO, Fla.—Most AHR attendees say 2010 will be a good year for business and most think it will be better or much better than 2009.
Among findings:
• The best prospects for business are retrofit (54%) followed by maintenance (28%) and new construction (18%). Hospitals/health care is seen as the best market sector.
• 90% say they are interested in seeing products that are promoted as “green” or sustainable.
• 97% say they’re also interested in seeing products promoted as energy efficient.
These are among results of this year’s survey of pre-registered Expo attendees. Some 865 participated in the survey conducted in the first two weeks of January.
