“Total Energy Management of Fans” and other topics will be described by Michael R. Olson, Manager – HVAC Applications, ABB, Inc. Automation Technologies, Low Voltage Drives. VFDs play a vital role in the precise control of high-performance green buildings by contributing towards energy-efficient air and water movement for HVAC systems. In addition, VFDs are an integral component of ASHRAE Standard 90.1 and the LEED – Energy and Atmosphere category.
Mr. Olson will present serial communications interfaces to building automation systems for the HVAC market, and describe the impact of these developments specifically on fan applications. ABB is the pioneer of serial communications interfaces and has recently enhanced the capabilities of the VFD in the HVAC environment. In this session, Mr. Olson will demonstrate these enhanced capabilities and describe several potential paradigm shifts that are expected to develop from same. In addition to optimizing electrical energy usage, the real-time information gained from these serial communications interfaces may be used to develop, and implement, enhanced energy savings strategies on fan applications. Case studies demonstrating the enhanced energy savings available will be presented, with a live equipment / communications demonstration.
Mr. Olson has extensive experience in the HVAC, Water/Wastewater Treatment, and Chemical markets. He has been applying adjustable speed drives for over 27 years. Mr. Olson has been published numerous times in trade journal articles discussing energy savings and the proper application of adjustable speed drives and has been a contributing editor to several books on the subject. He has an Electrical Engineering degree from the University of Illinois, and a Masters of Science in Engineering Management degree from the Milwaukee School of Engineering. He is a Member of ASHRAE and of BACnet International. He is on the BACnet International marketing committee and has helped plan and coordinate all BACnet Conference and Expos since 2005. He also attended the United States Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs for two years.

ASHRAE Standard 90.1 requires efficient part-load control above a certain HP and the easiest and best way to accomplish the part-load efficiency specified is VFDs. Likewise, LEED points are available for use of VFDs on fans and pumps and the Energy and Atmosphere category awards points for electrical part-load efficiency.
